One thing that has set us apart — or made us Standout — since our founding in 2006 is our willingness to tweak our designs to fit the needs of specific customers. That is something our larger and often overseas-sourcing competitors do not and/or cannot do.

However, building a single special console comes at a cost. We need to make special parts and to provide special attention throughout the manufacturing process to that specific unit. Sometimes we need to purchase special packaging. Sometimes we need to program the CNC for just one part. Normally it demands the attention of one of our most skilled craftspeople. All of these things factor into the price of the custom piece, often putting a non-standard Standout out of reach of the customer.

We recently took a look back at the sorts of changes we have made over the years and saw some patterns. We then took a look at what we could do to make the most common requests easier for the shop and therefore more affordable to our customers. Out of this analysis comes our new Semi-Custom Console program that we are pleased to announce today!

You can order a Haven, Horizon, or Majestic console modified in any of these ways:

  1. Lower the speaker shelf. This allows you to fit a taller speaker than you can with our standard build. We drop it to the maximum extent possible while still maintaining the functionality of the media drawer or drawers below. The adjustment varies by model.
  2. Reduce the console width. This allows you to fit your console in the space you have available. The reduction comes out of the middle section in 2" increments. Custom reductions are possible but cost a little more.
  3. Add Depth. This adds 2" to the overall depth and inside depth of your console. Fit your extra deep gear without having to leave the back off!

We have to enter the order on this end so we created a nifty survey to help us gather your requirements. You can find more information about this new program here:

Wow, once again, time has flown by and it has been way too long since we blogged. In our defense, we spend lots of time speaking, chatting and emailing with customers! While we can’t go back in time, we can look back in time and answer a popular question at the same time: what do people buy? (Warning: your preferences may vary!) Read More

In our last post just two days ago, we shared a peek at our upcoming Horizon EX 81-inch wide solid wood media console. Today, we share a preview of our upcoming Majestic EX 82-inch wide solid wood media console. While we don't have photos yet, we do have very illustrative renderings and sketches.

New Majestic EX 82" Wide Solid Wood Media Console

Once gain the layout mirrors that of our biggest model (and current biggest seller), the Haven EX 82"media console. The overall height and depth are the same as our other Majestic, the EX 70" console. Width is 81.75" (rounded to 82" for naming).

Dimensions of the Majestic EX 82" Media Console / TV Stand for AV

The center channel shelf measures 39.25 wide x 8.3125 tall, making it perfect for excellent center speakers like the Paradigm Prestige 55C.

As with our other media consoles / AV cabinets, its two drawers feature dovetail joinery and movable/removable dividers for maximum media storage flexibility.

And, of course, this new model has the long list of features that make a Standout a standout, like removable back panels, passive ventilation (temperature-controlled fans optional), hidden wheels, and lots of wire chases.

Available for pre-order on Monday, October 10. We will announce the availability of photo samples shortly as well.

There is no denying we have not posted to our blog for some time. That's not to say we've not been busy! So what's new, you ask? An 81-inch version of our perennial favorite, the Horizon EX 72-inch wide solid wood media console, that's what! We don't have photos just yet but we do have some very illustrative renderings and sketches.

Standout Designs Horizon EX 81" Solid Wood Media Console

The layout mirrors that of our biggest model (and current biggest seller), the Haven EX 82"media console. The overall height and depth are the same as our other Horizons.

Standout Designs Horizon EX 81" Solid Wood Media Console - Dimensions

The center channel shelf measures 36.5 wide x 9.375 tall, making it perfect for excellent center speakers like the Paradigm Prestige 55C.

The shelf is not quite as tall as the narrower Horizons because we've added some support under the top so it can handle an appropriate amount of weight. Nor is it as wide as the Haven 82" so you won't be able to fit a Paradigm Studio CC-690.

As with our other media consoles / AV cabinets, its two drawers feature dovetail joinery and movable/removable dividers for maximum media storage flexibility.

Available for pre-order on Monday, October 10. We will announce the availability of photo samples shortly as well.

NOTE: the knobs and pulls illustrated on not the actual knobs. This model will feature the same knobs and pulls as our other Horizons.

Thanksgiving is over. Hanukkah is in process. Christmas is two weeks away. The Holiday Season is upon us, at last. At Standout, we've been talking about the arrival of the holidays since October 1. Why? It has nothing to do with the ever growing "Black Friday" hype and everything to do with delivering great furniture to as many customers as possible before the year is out.

Since this time last year, we have redesigned one style, added two new styles, and expanded the number of models across styles from 5 to 16. Plus, for the most part, we make them in 5 or 6 woods and finishes. So building the right mix of consoles in the right mix of colors and configurations is downright impossible.

Our answer: October 1 we began telling customers to order now and we'd guarantee delivery plus the lowest price through the end of 2015. We ever resorted to this guy on Facebook:

The sooner you order your Standout, the happier you will be

A good many customers heeded our words. Their Standout solid wood media consoles are now in their homes awaiting family and friends for the holidays.

As of this writing, we still have a number of models ready to ship. These include a few Havens, a smattering of Horizons (including our new smaller Horizon), a single Majestic, and a nice selection of beautiful Norwalks (including some fantastic photo samples). All reflect great holiday savings.

The building continues as we look ahead to Second Christmas for our business (aka the Super Bowl). Anything ordered but not in stock will shoot to the top of our list. Our goal is to ship December backorders in January.

Happy Holidays from Standout Designs!

The news this morning is dominated by the continued financial woes in China and the possible impacts on American companies. The story goes like this: the more exposure a company has to China, the more worrisome things are for that company. We are pleased to let you know that this brouhaha has little to do with Standout Designs and our unwavering mission to design and build the very best media consoles for our customers.
