Standout Manufacturing Standout furniture ships factory-assembled using time-honored construction techniques that result in long-lasting beauty and durability. Here is an overview of how it is made. From Solid Lumber to Solid Panel Standout furniture begins as rough lumber. Long, wide boards are "ripped" to a width of between 2 1/2" and 3 1/4" inches, and then cut to the needed lengths by an optimizing cutoff saw that avoids undesirable defects like knots. Some of the resulting boards are then edge-glued together, with attention given to complimentary grain pattern and color, and clamped under pressure to dry, to create solid wood panels. Precision Machining Most parts go on to a CNC router where a number of operations critical to the appearance and assembly of the furniture take place. Parts are trimmed down from their rough size to their finished dimension size. Aesthetic elements such as rounded edges are added. Large holes for features like wire management are cut, while small holes used in assembly are bored. Outstanding Finish Completed parts are next sanded and finished prior to assembly. Every surface receives penetrating color (except "natural" finishes of course) and then multiple topcoats to create an attractive finish more durable than traditional lacquers. Parts machined with 21st-century precision are hand-assembled using techniques long used by master woodworkers, some for centuries. Doors, for example, are constructed with coped mortises and tenons, reinforced with dowels. Our sturdy cabinets are assembled using screws, dowels, and glue.
