Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some of our common questions and answers. If you have others, please contact us.

Veneer furniture looks pretty good, so why should I bother with solid wood?
The beauty of a veneer panel is only skin deep: pierce the thin layer of actual wood grain - typically between 1/50th to 1/36th of an inch - and you forever expose its inner core of MDF, particleboard, or plywood. As solid wood panel consists of 36 to 50 times the genuine wood, you might expect solid wood furniture to cost much more. That is not always so: we sell American-made solid wood furniture at prices competitive with veneer. So, why bother with veneer?

Why do you sometimes charge more for different woods and finishes?
Our pricing reflects the relative cost of the raw materials that go into our furniture. Some wood species simply cost more (or less) than others. The cost differential is more pronounced with solid wood furniture than with veneer because solid wood panels are 100% wood, while veneer is simply a thin layer of wood grain bonded to an inexpensive inner core.

Why do you use only Pennsylvania hardwoods?
Our state's managed forests produce more hardwood lumber than any other state, yet have more trees than 100 years ago. So our backyard seems like the natural place for us to obtain fine quality lumber.
In addition, our customers appreciate the beauty and quality of furniture made with these renowned woods. Plus, by making our furniture locally using nearby renewable resources, we support our local economy and produce great furniture without encouraging the deforestation of tropical rainforests in Indonesia.

If hardwoods are so desirable, why do you use Soft Maple in your furniture?
Soft Maple is indeed a hardwood, notwithstanding a name that suggests otherwise. In fact, it offers the same hardness as Cherry and over twice the hardness of the softest American hardwood, Alder. It is just not quite as hard as another Maple species, Hard Maple.

Your "Cinnamon" option looks like Cherry to me, so what's up with the name?
Our Cherry stain on Soft Maple does indeed compare favorably with Cherry-stained Cherry - and at a much lower price point. We call it "Cinnamon" to clearly distinguish the two choices offered to customers.

How accurately do the images on your site portray actual furniture finishes?
We strive to portray our finishes as accurately as possible on our web site, going so far as comparing actual product with product images on a specially calibrated monitor. However, colors can vary by computer monitor, printer, and room lighting. Upon request, we are happy to provide wood/finish samples at no charge. To order samples, click here.
Please keep in mind that every tree is unique in grain appearance and stain absorption, so a given sample will not necessarily exactly match the furniture piece you will receive.

Can you send me samples of your wood/finish?
You can order wood/finish samples by click here. Please keep in mind that every tree is unique in grain appearance and stain absorption, so a given sample will not necessarily exactly match the furniture piece you will receive.

How can I know that your console will accommodate my equipment?
There is a saying in woodworking: measure twice, cut once. Similarly, we suggest that you review the dimensions of the equipment that you intend to use in and on your console -- before ordering.
If you would like our assistance, please contact us with the details (make and model) and we will be happy to do some research for you.

What else do you make?
We plan to offer consoles in additional sizes and with specific locations within the home in mind. We also plan to expand certain styles into furniture groups, so that customers can also purchase side towers, coffee tables, and end tables. Keep up with our latest developments: join our newsletter (see footer of this page).

How do you ship?
Standout Designs ships furniture throughout the US and Canada via Con-way Freight at very competitive rates. Shipments to much of the US safely arrive in only a day or two. Cross-country shipments take as little as 4 days.
A Con-way dispatcher calls to coordinate delivery. We also provide service center contact information so customers can proactively call to schedule the appointment. Smaller items not shipping together with furniture typically ship UPS.
See our Shipping Information page for complete shipping information. For more about Con-way or to track your shipment, click here.
